AVON Philippines encourages gender-based violence victims to speak out

As part of its efforts to support UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence though its own #SpeakOutListenUp campaign, AVON Philippines visited Safe Refuge to get to know how the organization empowered victims to speak out, recover, and rebuild their lives.

For the past 12 years, Safe Refuge has provided shelter, food, medical and dental care, and clothing, and has nurtured women and children victims of extreme poverty, human trafficking, and the sex industry through counseling and education.

During the visit, AVON donated intimate apparel to the women and children in the safe house and listened to how they were able to overcome their circumstances through the help and guidance of Safe Refuge.

AVON’s #SpeakOutListenUp campaign ran from November 25 (UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). For 16 days, AVON went orange in their social media platforms and shared posts to raise awareness on different forms of violence that prevent women from reaching their full potential and the many ways they can protect themselves and report instances of abuse.

Only AVON has been a strong advocate for women for over 130 years. It has a longstanding commitment to help end Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), donating $65 million to women-centered organizations all over the world. In the Philippines, AVON staunchly supports four (4) local NGOs through annual awareness campaigns and donations that provide assistance to women victims of gender-based violence.

Scientific fact: Women are more attracted to men with facial hair

Science says it. Men with facial hair are more attractive. A study in the 70s and two more recent ones conducted by Neave and Shields in 2008 and Dixson and Brooks in 2013 all came up with the same conclusion: Most women find men with a stubble or a five-o’clock shadow very, very attractive.   Although the women’s perception of male attractiveness changed according to the amount and length of men’s facial hair, most women in the study found men with a moderate amount of facial hair to be the most attractive. Some women did prefer men with no facial hair, but to the majority, men with no facial hair were not very attractive and seemed the least likely romantic partners. Women perceived full bearded men to be aggressive, more mature and a bit too much to handle.
