5 (stove) top tips for caring for your burners

In most Pinoy households, stovetops are expected to take a lot of use and abuse. It’s little wonder that after a few years, they show the more wear and tear than any other appliance in the kitchen. Even stoves and ranges known for their durability and longevity, such as La Germania, need a little TLC every now and then to deal with the common problems that crop up over the years. Gas burners can rust and clog, while electric range coils and stovetops scratch and accumulate grime.

You don’t have to live with broken down burners, though. Keeping your range in top condition is easier than you think, all it takes is a few extra steps to safeguard your stovetop. Today we’ll give you five tips on how to keep your stovetop in prime condition for years.

1. Start cleaner habits today
Spills and grease splatters can build up over time, hardening into blackened, stubborn spots that clog your burner’s holes, initiate rust, and invite the risk of grease fire. Don’t wait until all your burners are a mess – wipe up all spills as soon as possible, and give your stovetop a wipe down with your degreaser of choice after frying food. This prevents the buildup from happening in the first place.
You still have to do a deep-cleaning session every few months, but being proactive with cleaning also ensures that you don’t have to do it as often as you would have if you let spills go unchecked.

2. Use back burners more often
Bigger ranges like La Germania’s five-burner range require a little more upkeep than its smaller line of single electric and gas burner stovetops, but all of them are built to last for generations. What really helps, though, is if you prevent spills and splatters before they happen. Easier said than done, especially in busy kitchens.
Here's a simple, doable tip: whenever possible, use the range's back burners more often, turning in the handles away from the edges to avoid accidentally nudging them. This not only protects your range but also serves as additional protection for anyone who happens to be hanging around the kitchen while you cook.

3. Pick out special pans for your glass stove tops
Electric stovetops are usually made of glass and ceramic, and while they are tough, they can get scratched up with the wrong kind of cookware, shortening their usable lifespan. If you have this kind of stove top, avoid very heavy pans and pots that have rough bottoms such as cast iron or ceramic pots with unfinished bottoms.

Despite the sturdy, scratch-resistant build of La Germania's electric stovetops, you should also remember to avoid placing stirrers and spatulas on them as you cook. They may leave residue that will get burnt into the stovetop, or, in the case of plastic, melt into the surface.

4. Do a deep-clean routine every so often
Read through the user manual and learn how to deep clean your stove top properly. This will help you avoid any damage you might accidentally cause.  Arm yourself with the right tools like an open pin or a paperclip for clearing out the tiny holes in the burner, a brush for the parts that can be soaked in water and washed, and a soft, non-abrasive cloth for the stove top itself.

If you have a glass stove top, though, deep cleaning is as simple as washing it with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaning solution.

5. Know when you need maintenance
Any good brand that has faith in its products will always offer assistance for maintenance and regular upkeep. La Germania, for example, has one of the best after-sales services in the industry, with one main office in Metro Manila and several other service centers all around the Philippines. They even office service assistance for outdated models – some of which are decades old!
Always call a service center to replace old and worn out burner tops if you want to extend the overall life of your range and keep your kitchen a safe place. It’s also a must to have your range checked if it has gone through something damaging: a flood, maybe, or it’s been standing idle for a few months. Getting it checked by pros would likely save you a lot of heartache in the future.

Range care begins with your stovetop and extending the life of your stove needs only a little effort on your part. Follow these five tips and who knows, maybe you'll be handing over your (very functional, looking like new) unit over to your daughter when she moves to a home of her own!

Scientific fact: Women are more attracted to men with facial hair

Science says it. Men with facial hair are more attractive. A study in the 70s and two more recent ones conducted by Neave and Shields in 2008 and Dixson and Brooks in 2013 all came up with the same conclusion: Most women find men with a stubble or a five-o’clock shadow very, very attractive.   Although the women’s perception of male attractiveness changed according to the amount and length of men’s facial hair, most women in the study found men with a moderate amount of facial hair to be the most attractive. Some women did prefer men with no facial hair, but to the majority, men with no facial hair were not very attractive and seemed the least likely romantic partners. Women perceived full bearded men to be aggressive, more mature and a bit too much to handle.
